Todd Gilens

Todd Gilens is a Bay Area visual artist, garden designer, and educator. Todd has led workshops and courses at the Academy of Art University, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Point Reyes National Seashore Association, and regularly presents his work in public talks and conferences.

For recent projects, he has assisted scientists surveying streams in the Sierra Nevada, collected historic writing in archives, and studied the water concepts of ancient Greece and Rome. This work has taken him to Belfast, UK, where he developed ways of describing the contemporary landscape in the handwriting of historic residents, and to Reno, Nevada, where he is designing a mile-long text about water and the shapes of land.

“Reading Forest” a commission by the National Forest Foundation to address forest ecology in the Sierra, will be on view summer 2021 in South Lake Tahoe. Todd’s written work has been published in Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Culture, Harvard Design Review, Landscape Journal, and most recently with Medusa’s Laugh Press and Corbel Stone Press. Todd received a master’s degree in landscape architecture from Harvard University and his website is www.toddgilens.com.
