Why Come?

The Center allows teachers and students to immerse themselves in nature and learn about it firsthand. Here in the Park, there are many exciting opportunities for hands-on learning and for experiencing ecological concepts that are difficult to learn inside a classroom.

Here are a few of the many reasons why the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center can provide a valuable experience for both you and your students:

Teachable moments
A gopher snake slithers across your path as you and your students enjoy a nature hike, a red tailed hawk dives in the distance to catch a mouse, your students turn over a log and find a salamander. Nature guides the teaching as you discuss these ecological phenomena with your students. These opportunities can only happen when you step outside the traditional classroom.

You’re in charge
We understand that you know your students best. You know the most effective way for them to learn and to have fun, so we let you lead the program. From tidepooling to maritime history, ecology to animal adaptations, tailor your visit to compliment what you’ve been working on with your class in school. Point Reyes offers opportunities to study all these areas while integrating other subjects like reading and writing into your environmental and science education curricula.

Training for teachers
We offer an annual Teacher Training Workshop for teachers who are planning to use the Center. This annual workshop provides teachers with a variety of hands-on, thought-provoking activities designed to teach science and ecology concepts in the outdoors (some of which are linked to the California Science Standards) as well as practical tips on using the facility.

We support you
Our staff supports you throughout the planning phase by providing advice on curriculum planning and design, sample schedules , suggested activities , sample menus and general advice. The Center's library and teaching materials/discovery kits are available to you during your stay, not to mention all the amazing natural resources and hands-on learning at your fingertips in Point Reyes National Seashore. While it is the teachers' responsibility to do the teaching, there are a variety of educational programs available and unlimited opportunities within the park.

Even if you’ve never done anything like this before with your students, we collaborate with you to make it easy by providing you with planning support and teaching resources. Surrounded by the trails, fields, beaches, and wildlife that make Point Reyes the exciting learning opportunity that it is, you can teach your students the wonders of the natural world while at the same time teaching the State and National Science Standards.
