Discovery Kits and Other Teaching Material That Can Be Checked Out Upon Arrival

Discovery Kits and Games

The UnnatureTrail: an activity that introduces students to the concept of camouflage. Kit contains instructions and 12 objects to hide. Also called the "camouflage hike".

Stream Study Kit Box: designed to be used in conjunction with the Creek Study Curriculum which was created by the National Park Service with the help of several classroom teachers. This is an activity that introduces students to the diversity of life in the riparian habitat.

It contains:
pH Test: Box of pH indicator strips; water sample containers; stopwatch; pH charts

Dissolved Oxygen Test: Wastewater bottle; dissolved oxygen tablets; 7 glass test tubes with caps; instruction cards; test tube drying rack.

Temperature/velocity Test: 2 thermometers; dry sticks (to float in creek); rope (12 feet).

Aquatic Insect Station: Ruler; aquatic insect collection pan; ice cube tray for insect sorting; paint brushes; plastic spoons; 2 basters; 2 two-way magnifying viewers; 20 magnifying glasses; 20 scoops; 2 D nets for collecting; 20 stream hunt card sets; 20 insect ID sheets; 3 "Pond Life" Golden Guides and instructions.

Fire Box: contains parts of the fire adapted Bishop pine - open and closed cones, seeds and needles; 3 different types of ash with descriptions; sample of Curlex – a rehab tool for bulldozer damage done to the landscape with explanation; and Prescribe Burns – a role playing activity which explores the issues surrounding the use of prescribed burns as a fire management tool.

Weather Box: to be used in tandem with the weather station located on site, it covers cloud identification, temperature conversion, and wind speed. Kit contains minimum and maximum thermometer; dry and wet bulb thermometer; barometer; hand held wind speed gauge; weather vain, and a log for recording and predicting weather.

Animal Clue Game Box: a great rainy day activity which introduces students to the effects of fire on a few organisms that live in Point Reyes: Turkey Vulture, Mountain Beaver, Bishop Pine, and Slender Salamander.

Tree Key for the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center: a guide to the trees found most commonly around the Center. The kit contains directions, number cards to identify tree stations, and laminated tree keys (quantity approx. 10).
