Health & Hiking POLES Weekend Retreat

Connect with nature. Rejuvenate. Experience a variety of classes, activities and discussions designed to help you maintain your ability to enjoy the outdoors. Together we will learn transformative skills focused on improving and maintaining your skeletal structure, your vitality and your quality of life.
Learn and practice skills to enhance your health and wellness, optimize your fitness as well as improve your ability to hike efficiently and comfortably using hiking poles. A variety of top quality poles will be provided – learn which poles fit you best and will enable you to achieve your hiking goals.
The weekend will include structured classes, group movement and exercise sessions as well as a variety of health and wellness discussions. Participants may enjoy all or some of the activities.
Weekend rate includes two nights in hostel-style accommodations and most meals.
There will be two hikes scheduled: one each on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Saturday is part of the hiking pole class. Sunday’s hike is to practice poles skills, enjoy nature and experience the magic of Point Reyes.
There is no cell reception; this will be an opportunity to “unplug: and to enjoy the sounds of nature and the magic of Point Reyes. The weekend new moon might give us some star gazing opportunities.

3:00 Fitness for the Trail class
Six key elements determine your ability to maintain physical fitness. This interactive session progressively helps you create a more structurally-solid foundation. Individualized movements focus on improving joint health, balance, posture, endurance, flexibility and strength. This is a combination lecture and participation which will give us a common language for the weekend and give you tools for establishing a healthy exercise routine. Participants will be able to assess their level in each category and learn movements and exercises in each that will help facilitate optimal physical health. Extremely easy, low level of exertion.

5:30 Dinner (discussion: individuals’ intros, issues and goals)
7:15 to 8:30 Hiking Poles lecture, anatomy discussion and pole fitting (gearing up – variety of quality poles provided)
6:30 to 8:30 Tea, Morning movements & Breakfast (discussion: outline of the day)
8:45 Hiking pole training session and short hike (2 to 4 miles)
Beginner to experienced hikers learn techniques which help improve performance on the trail. Optimal use of poles on uphill will improve your power, endurance and spine function; on the downhill, you’ll develop skills for improving confidence and saving your knees.

7:00 “My Feet!” Session on feet including blister prevention
Joint Health, self and partner massage, metabolism
Evening Stargazing (courtesy of Sunday’s new moon) – if clear skies prevail, the sky should be full of stars - but, this is Point Reyes, so there may be fog - who knows?
6:30 to 8:30 Tea, Morning movements & Breakfast
8:45 Practice Pole Hike (approximately 3 hours at a steady pace - 4 to 7 miles). Enjoy nature and experience the magic of Point Reyes.
11:45 Recovery strategies, including Foam Roller session
12:45 Lunch (discussions: nutrition, wellness, fitting it all in)
2:00 Stretches (yoga, partner)
3:15 to 4 Farewell gathering (feedback time - least favorite part of weekend, best part of weekend)
4:30 to 5 Time to leave
Beverages: Bring your own beverages for the weekend if you want something other than water or herb or green tea.
Good quality hiking shoes (with tread).
Extra pad(s) for under the mat (something to protect your knees and your mat from the ground if we are outside)
Foam roller (if you have one)
Yoga strap (or terrycloth bathrobe belt)
Your favorite face and body lotion
A rag to wipe off your poles if they get dirty or wet
Your own cloth napkins (no paper please)
Rain gear, if necessary.
Optional: Your favorite piece of exercise equipment (small of course), such as massage balls, bands, hand weights. Be creative, as we’ll be sharing our success stories.
A full service kitchen is provided. The nearest stores and restaurants are 20 miles away over country roads. Bring one dish to share for the weekend plus one snack to share. The main dish will be your contribution towards healthy group meals for the weekend. We will coordinate as the workshop approaches so that we have a balance of dishes for each meal. Participants will be asked to submit 3 descriptions/recipes of a dish to share (please indicate if it is a breakfast, lunch or dinner item).
