Understanding Your Digital SLR

Bill Helsel
Sunday, March 14 • 10 AM - 5 PM • $95 ($90 members)

Do you have a beautiful, new digital interchangeable Single Lens Reflex camera (not a compact or point and shoot-type digital), but are afraid to take pictures in anything but Automatic or Program mode? Do you want to understand and use your camera’s other modes and controls for better, more creative photos? Bill will explain and demonstrate the SLR’s most essential controls and features, while you follow along with your own camera. Then, we’ll do some picture-taking exercises to reinforce what you’ve learned and further demonstrate what’s possible. You will learn about lens focal lengths, automatic and manual focus, apertures and f-stops, shutter speed, exposure and metering modes, ISO, depth of field, white balance, histograms, file types (JPEG, RAW, etc.) and more.

Creative Composition

Harold Davis
Saturday, March 27 • 2 PM - 8 PM • $95 ($90 members)

Composition is one of the unalterable constants of photography. Even if you’re a Photoshop expert, it’s impossible to salvage a really bad composition during post-processing. At the same time, effective composition is what makes someone sit up and pay attention to a photo. For photographers, understanding composition is critical, and photos should be taken with intentionality and an understanding of the impact of the photographer’s compositional choices. Using the glorious backdrop of Point Reyes National Seashore for field work, we’ll examine images, using guided discussion, structured exercises, and field photography assignments to achieve a better understanding of composition and how to use it effectively in your photos. This workshop is intended for photographers of all levels and topics covered will include understanding the relationship of exposure and camera controls to compositional goals, achieving a compositional vision, and mastering the formal design aspects of photographic composition.

This class is currently full.  Please call (415) 663-1200 ext. 373 to add your name to the waitlist.

The Colors of Spring - Making Great Landscape Photos

Bill Helsel
May 14-16 • 7 PM Fri - 4 PM Sun • $215 ($200 members)

In spring, the Point Reyes landscape is alive with color—a treat for the eyes. However, translating what we see into beautiful photos can be a challenge. Join us to expand your vision and practice your skills in capturing both intense and subtle color at some of the area’s best locations. Our weekend will be divided between classroom and field sessions. In the classroom, we’ll review the fundamentals of good composition with lots of examples, discuss techniques for seeing with fresh eyes, talk about films, digital capture and image-enhancement techniques, and the creative use of filters. We'll also talk about working with different kinds of light, weather, sun, moon, tides and seasons, plus good shooting locations in the Point Reyes area. During our field sessions, we'll take advantage of weather and tide conditions to get the best from several locations, with Bill offering advice on subject matter and composition. Back in the classroom, we'll review some of your digital photos to see what worked and what didn't. Weather-permitting, Sunday will conclude with an optional photo session from late afternoon until sunset. You may work with any camera, digital or film, provided it allows manual control of focus, aperture and shutter speed, and  you are already familiar with its operation. Accommodations are included at the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center.

Night Photography

Harold Davis
June 18 - 20 • 7 PM Fri - 4 PM Sun • $235 ($220 members)

Night covers half the globe half the time and—surprising to many—photographic opportunities with digital equipment are as exciting at night as they are during the day. Night photography has always been an area for creative experimentation, but with the advent of digital photography and its expanded dynamic range and light sensitivity beyond the visible spectrum, the time has never been better to experience the freedom of the night. Harold will cover techniques, equipment, and night safety issues during an orientation session before moving outdoors to create night-time captures. In the morning, we’ll regroup to demystify digital post-processing of night captures in Photoshop and to evaluate our work in the context of personal creative goals, with plenty of breaks to head outside so we can experience and photograph the beautiful Point Reyes landscape. A second night shoot gives participants the opportunity to put into practice their newly-acquired night skills. We will learn to make beautiful images of the landscape after sunset, and take advantage of the extraordinary night environment and absence of light pollution within Point Reyes. Weather-permitting, it is possible that we may have the rare treat of photographing the nearby Point Reyes Lighthouse at night. You’ll go home with great images and skills to capture night photos while the rest of the world sleeps. Accommodations included at the Historic Lifeboat Station.

Photographing Waves

Harold Davis
Saturday, July 17 • 1 PM - 10 PM • $95 ($90 members)

Waves are one of the great forces of nature and photographing them is a joy and a challenge. In this workshop, we will use wave photography to consider the role of patterns in composition and learn how to use short shutter speeds to stop the motion of a wave. We’ll hold our cameras still, and let the motion of the surf create our images for us. Point Reyes has some of the greatest waves in the world to photograph. We’ll start with an orientation session that will explain wave photography techniques and then head out to at least two field locations to practice the skills we’ve learned. Then, we’ll head back to the classroom for a review of the photos we’ve made and a few more insider tips from Harold.
