Most people are overwhelmed by the subject of exposure. Our goal for this class is to explain it in a way that makes sense with a process you can learn from. By the end of Sean’s Powerpoint presentation, you will have gained the knowledge to feel more comfortable handling all types of exposures, producing fewer images that turn out too dark or too bright. With cameras in hand and perfect
exposures as our goal, we will join Sean as he leads us on a visual quest for incredible photographs. Topics will include: shutter speeds and
apertures; metering; the concept of middle grey; how your camera meter is fooled; white balance, histogram, and how to battle difficult lighting situations. He will also offer a variety of content in combination with his
knowledge and examples of work. Join us for a wonderful day of learning and
camaraderie amidst the California coast. You are welcome to bring any camera to this workshop (point-and-shoot, digital, film-based, etc.)

June 6-8 • 7 PM Fri - 4 PM Sun

Good black and white photography is about light and shadow, line, form and texture. Without the distraction of color you can make
powerful images that reveal the essence of a landscape, and with the unique tonal palette of infrared you can often transform a good landscape into something absolutely magical. Join us for a weekend of expanding your vision and practicing your skills in both classic and infrared black and white with the dramatic and varied Pt. Reyes landscape as your subject. Our weekend will be divided between classroom and field sessions. In the classroom, we’ll review the fundamentals of good composition with examples from some of the photographic greats, discuss techniques for seeing with fresh eyes, talk about conventional and infrared films, digital capture and image enhancement techniques, and the creative use of filters. We’ll also talk about working with different kinds of light and weather, the sun, moon, tides and seasons, plus good locations in the Pt. Reyes area. In our field sessions, we’ll take advantage of weather and tide conditions to get the best from several locations with Bill offering advice on subject matter and composition. Back in the classroom we’ll review some of your digital photos. You may work with any camera - digital or film - provided it allows manual control of focus, aperture and shutter speed, and you are already familiar with its operation. Accommodations included at the Environmental Education Center (see description on page 29.)

Point Reyes provides one of the most spectacular and varied landscapes in the world. Bring your digital camera to this workshop and expand your creative horizons by engaging in a photographic conversation with a master of digital landscape photography. Harold will present and discuss some of his own work, and explain concepts of light and exposure in the context of your personal creative goals. The special challenges and rewards of the Point Reyes landscape will be covered before heading out into the nearby fields for a guided photo shoot. We will then regroup to discuss our work in the light of our individual goals in landscape photography.

Night covers the globe half the time and—surprising to many—
photographic opportunities with digital equipment are as exciting
at night as they are during the day. Night photography has always been an area for creative experimentation, but with the advent of digital
photography, and its expanded dynamic range and light sensitivity beyond the
visible spectrum, the time has never been better to experience the
freedom of the night. Harold will cover techniques, equipment, and night safety
issues during an orientation session before moving outdoors, where we will create night-time captures. In the morning, we will regroup to demystify digital post-processing of night captures in Photoshop and to evaluate our work in the context of personal creative goals. A second night shoot gives participants the opportunity to put into practice the night skills they have learned. We will learn to make beautiful images of the landscape after sunset, and take advantage of the extraordinary night environment and absence of light pollution within Pt. Reyes. You’ll go home with great images and skills to capture night photos while the rest of the world sleeps. Accommodations included at the Education Center (see page 29.)
