Digital Landscape Photography

Harold Davis
Sunday, July 12 • 2:30 PM - 8:30 PM • $95 ($90 members)

*Please note new hours*

Point Reyes provides one of the most spectacular and varied landscapes in the world. Bring your digital camera to this workshop and expand your creative horizons by engaging in a photographic conversation with a master of digital landscape photography. Harold will present and discuss some of his own work, and explain concepts of light and exposure in the context of your personal creative goals. The special challenges and rewards of the Point Reyes landscape will be covered before heading out into the nearby fields for a guided photo shoot. We will then regroup to discuss our work in light of our individual goals in landscape photography.

Beyond the Snapshot - Photographing the Landscapes, People and Architecture of Point Reyes

Dave Wyman
August 28-30 • 7 PM Friday - 4 PM Sunday • $200 ($180 members)

Break exciting, new visual territory with the wide variety of subjects found at Point Reyes. Field sessions will mate shapes, forms, colors and textures with fresh concepts of composition and exposure. In addition to exploring the natural world, participants will photograph some of the area’s historic architecture and practice techniques for creating compelling travel portraits. The instructor and participants will share examples of their own photography, made prior to and during the seminar. Rather than focusing on post-processing of images with a computer, emphasis will be on the making of photographs. Expect short walks rather than longer trail hikes. Photographers with either digital and/or film cameras are welcome, as are those with any level of experience. Accommodations are included at the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center.

The Magic of Black and White

Bill Helsel
September 18-20 • 7 PM Friday - 4 PM Sunday • $190 ($170 members)

Good black and white photography is about light and shadow, line, form and texture. Without the distraction of color, you can make powerful images that reveal the essence of a landscape, and with the unique tonal palette of infrared, you can often transform a good landscape into something absolutely magical. Join us for a weekend of expanding your vision and practicing your skills in both classic and infrared black and white with the dramatic and varied Point Reyes landscape as your subject. Our weekend will be divided between classroom and field sessions. In the classroom, we’ll review the fundamentals of good composition with examples from some of the photographic greats, discuss techniques for seeing with fresh eyes, talk about conventional and infrared films, digital capture and image enhancement techniques, and the creative use of filters. We’ll also talk about working with different kinds of light and weather, the sun, moon, tides and seasons, plus good locations in the Point Reyes area. In our field sessions, we’ll take advantage of weather and tide conditions to get the best from several locations, with Bill offering advice on subject matter and composition. Back in the classroom, we’ll review some of your digital photos. You may work with any camera—digital or film—provided it allows manual control of focus, aperture and shutter speed, and you are already familiar with its operation. Accommodations are included at the Environmental Education Center.

Outdoor Portraiture

Barrie Rokeach
Sunday, October 4 • 11 AM - 6 PM • $95 ($90 members)

Learn how to take advantage of the beautiful and varied landscape of Point Reyes to make stunning and intimate portraits of your family and friends. In this class, we will discuss the basic principles of portraiture, including composition and framing, lighting, settings, props, aesthetics, lenses and other technical considerations. We’ll touch on posed versus candid strategies, and individual versus group issues. Then we’ll head out into the field to explore practical applications of the material we’ve
covered, using each other as subjects. We’ll regroup at the end of the day to show and analyze our results. All levels of experience are welcome. Both film and digital cameras are welcome.

Night Photography

Harold Davis
October 9-11 • 7 PM Friday - 4 PM Sunday • $230 ($220 members)

Night covers half the globe half the time and—surprising to many—photographic opportunities with digital equipment are as exciting at night as they are during the day. Night photography has always been an area for creative experimentation, but with the advent of digital photography and its expanded dynamic range and light sensitivity beyond the visible spectrum, the time has never been better to experience the freedom of the night. Harold will cover techniques, equipment, and night safety issues during an orientation session before moving outdoors to create night-time captures. In the morning, we’ll regroup to demystify digital post-processing of night captures in Photoshop and to evaluate our work in the context
of personal creative goals, with plenty of breaks to head outside so we can experience and photograph the beautiful Point Reyes landscape. A second night shoot gives participants the opportunity to put into practice their newly-acquired night skills. We will learn to make beautiful images of the landscape after sunset, and take advantage of the extraordinary night environment and absence of light pollution within Point Reyes. Weather-permitting, it is possible that we may have the rare treat of photographing the nearby Point Reyes Lighthouse at night. You’ll go home with great images and skills to capture night photos while the rest
of the world sleeps. Accommodations are included at the Historic Lifeboat Station at Chimney Rock.

Artist's Light and the Poetic Eye

Jimmy Katz
Sunday, November 15 • 10 AM - 5 PM • $95 ($90 members)

Join Bolinas-based photographer Jimmy Katz for an information-packed, fun-filled day. This workshop is designed for film and digital photographers wishing to strengthen their abilities to see and work in color. Through a slide and digital presentation, a critique of students’ work, and a planned field session, participants will gain a sensitivity to light and its effects on color, composition, texture, pattern and design. Our main focus is the examination of light and color from a personal point of view. Jimmy will guide students to finding those subjects that inspire them and open the space for participants to see how their unique vision of the world can
help to develop an individual style for personal enjoyment or commercial success. In the late afternoon, students will chase the stunning low-angled autumnal light and put into practice concepts learned earlier in the day.
