How do we capture the many subtle aspects of the natural world in meaningful pieces of writing? And how do naturalists turn observations and impressions of plants and animals into words on a page? In this class we will observe, discuss, and practice various approaches to these questions with a special emphasis on challenging our word choices and descriptive approaches. David has a deep knowledge of the pieces and processes that have gone into shaping the English language, so together as a class we will spend our day observing the natural world and brainstorming about how to understand and describe colors, forms, textures, and processes through a wide range of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We will practice writing like naturalists, while also looking to communicate our ideas and observations in fresh ways. All levels are welcome.
